26/5/09 WISE KIDS and Urdd develop
Innovative Programme for Internet Generation
WISE KIDS and the
Urdd have today launched
an innovative project that will train youth workers and
Urdd development officers on innovative and safe
Internet use, and create resources to support Welsh
speaking youth in Wales. The project, launched at the
Welsh youth festival, the Urdd National Eisteddfod, and
funded by
BT Wales, will ensure that young people know how to
keep themselves safe online and when using mobile
technologies.
Amongst other things, Urdd officers will be trained on
up-to-date, innovative use of Internet and digital
technologies, with a view to using these to engage with
young people. They will also be supported to develop
resources in Welsh, which they will use to deliver
'Internet Literacy' workshops with young people. The
project will also create a Welsh language 'drama and
role play scenarios' activity pack which will be used by
Urdd "Aelwydydd" as well as schools and other bodies.
Using drama and role play, the activity pack will help
give young people the opportunity to discuss the
opportunities and challenges they encounter when using
the Internet. They will also receive advice and discuss
good practise when using the Internet.
As part of the launch, the Urdd also showcased Internet
Safety videos that their staff had created with youth
from their Digital Club. These will be used as part of
the campaign to promote safer Internet use.
Sangeet Bhullar, Executive Director of WISE KIDS, and
chair of the Wales Internet Safety Partnership (WISP)
said “It is great to be working with the Urdd, as we
recognise their interest and commitment to providing
engaging and relevant programmes in Welsh, which will
ensure that young people use the Internet and mobile
technologies effectively and safely. We are also
delighted to have the support from BT Wales who are
funding this programme, as an ongoing and key part of
their corporate social responsibility.
